Cello vs violin - which is better live?

Many are considering whether to choose a violin or a cello for their event. The two instruments are actually often confused, but there is a big difference between the two. The violin plays in a higher register than the cello. Many people would call the violin's notes 'brighter' than the cello. Just as women often sing in a higher register than men, the violin plays in a different key than the cello. So in this comparison, the violin is the woman and the man is the cello. They are two different registers and different starting points. 

The difference in sound between violin and cello is simply due to the size of the instruments and therefore the length of the strings. Both instruments are beautiful in their sound but each fulfils its role in an ensemble and as a solo instrument.

A violin can play solo, but often requires a room like a church where the acoustics are designed for acoustic music. In fact, the violin itself does not have a very large output volume-wise - in other words, it does not play very loud, as the sound box is small.

In Limunt we often recommend that the violin is matched with cello. In this way, the two instruments complement each other. The violin mostly plays the melody, and the cello provides the fullness, the bass and much of the dynamics of the music.

Choose violin duo for a fuller sound

Although the violin can play well on its own, it works much more powerfully with another instrument. For example, some people request a violin duet, but at Limunt we always recommend a duo of cello and violin. This classic duo is an obvious and very common choice in the classical music. There are many scores, arrangements and recordings with this type of instrumentation.

You also have the option to book a violin trio, cello and bratsch. This type of classical string trio is an absolutely fantastic instrumentation for both intimate events, receptions or weddings. With three instruments you get a completely different sound and fullness in the music. The viola - or viola - creates the perfect centrepiece to the music, tying the expression together well with more nuance than the other two instruments are able to create on their own.

The most booked option with violin is clearly the classical string quartetthat completes any romantic event. Here you get a first violin, a second violin, a viola and the cello. The quartet is our own favourite violin band as the sound is full, expressive and very heartfelt. If you don't want to compromise on anything, the quartet is the preferred option.
