A quartet allows for a drummer – and this could be the right choice for you if you’re looking for music that’s a bit more groovy and rhythmic – perhaps as a lead-up to everyone getting up to dance? We book some really brilliant jazz music for reception, as jazz is perfect for playing in the background and adding atmosphere to the event without taking up too much space. At the same time, jazz is a bit more exotic and cool than most other background music.

The right music during a meal ensures a great atmosphere for you and your guests – and, in fact, research also shows that the right music makes you enjoy your meal even more. The musicians who play during the meal are just as much ‘at work’ as those who play party musicwhile people dance. The music should be adapted to the party, the mood and the flow of the party.

Many people make the mistake of playing a playlist in the background whilst eating, but this can lead to a number of problems. Firstly, the music has to be paused and restarted every time a news item comes on. Secondly, it places enormous demands on the person putting the playlist together – he or she has to cater for lots of different people and their tastes. Furthermore, playlists on various streaming services aren’t adjusted for volume from song to song. This means that one song might play really loudly, after which you have to go and turn the volume down. The next song might have been recorded at a higher volume – and then you have to go and turn it up again.
